C3001 #2846 tar-save will be created 2000 Jul 12-13 Processing factor = ?? DOY 194-195 95% have fourfit Quality Codes of 5-9. The observing mode in this first CORE-3 experiment differs from that of earlier CORE experiments in two respects: -- 16 sidebands are recorded: the usual 14 USB signals plus the LSB signals from the highest and lowest X-band frequency channels. -- Each sideband with an analog bandwidth of 4 MHz is sampled at 8 Mbps and is then "fanned out" to 2 recorder tracks written at 4 Mbps. Gilcreek: Was not processed beyond a few prepass scans. Due to a failing -15v power supply in the DAR, fringe and phase cal amplitudes were 2-10 times weaker than normal, depending on channel, at the start of the experiment; by the end, fringes could barely be detected only on the strongest sources. Kokee: High error rates on track 33 affected S-band channel 6. Fringed with manual phases. Matera: S-band channels 1 and 3 were deleted due to severe RFI. The loss of channels sometimes leads to fourfit finding the wrong peak in the multiband delay resolution function, particularly when the SNR is low; some data were refringed to force fourfit to pick the correct peak, but certainly some instances were missed. Future CORE-3 experiments will use the CORE-A frequency sequence that is designed to avoid the worst of the RFI at Matera. Even with 2 channels deleted, 5-10% of S-band scans have 'G' error codes due to RFI in one or more channels. Fringes in X-band channel 5 were ~30% lower than normal. The cause was later traced to a video converter with no image rejection. Onsala: Playback was poor on all tracks during most of the first recorder pass. Playback improved markedly after the first pass. Westford: OK. Wettzell: OK. QC=5-9 KE 97% E - Westford EV 98% I - Matera IV 92% K - Kokee TV 95% T - Onsala V - Wettzell ****************************************************************************** C3001 (2000 July 12-13) ======================= Correlator notes: Gilcreek: Failure of their DAT -15v power supply during the experiment caused BBC problems, including LO unlock. (Need to determine exactly what happened -- truly low video levels also, or just low as reported by the square law detectors, which use -15 v?). Even at the start of the experiment, before problems with the power supply were apparent, the fringes and phase cal at Gilcreek are bad. Both show large (up to factor of 10) variations in amplitudes from channel to channel. Their DAT setup, as shown in the log, was identical to Kokee's, and Kokee worked fine. So what was wrong? [Note added on Sept 25: Gilcreek performed fine in C3002, so a setup problem or hardware failure other than the dying power supply in C3001 seems unlikely. Best guess is that the BBC LOs were sensitive enough to the bad -15v supply that the fringe and pcal were affected before other problems were noted.] Onsala: Playback is terrible. Error rates in log are typically >1000 on all tracks. They reported problems with the recorder vacuum early in the experiment, but the high error rates persist throughout. Need to investigate. Kokee: High error rates on track 33 in several prepass scans. Log shows $$$$$ for track 33 in most parity checks. Manual phases for Kokee. Matera: 'G' error codes in all S-band prepass scans due to strong RFI in channels 1 and 3. The original wideband frequency sequence was inadvertently used for C3001, rather than the core-a modified sequence designed to avoid RFI at Matera, so this problem should be alleviated with the use of the latter sequence in future core-3's. Deleted channels S1 and S3 in fringing. Matera channel X5 is weak. Later investigation showed that the cause was no image rejection in VC05. August 17, after production run: Many fringe plots with low SNR and every other AP missing, e.g., 195-0859_4C39.25/*ojfffs V baselines. Integration time is typically about half the scheduled duration. For reprocessing purposes, identify these scans using shortscans program. Table of #scans with int_time/duration <= frac vs. frac: frac # scans (after picking ones with best QC) ==== ======= 0.1 11 .2 32 .3 40 .4 64 .5 87 .6 95 .7 95 .8 105 .85 109 .9 495 .95 703 1.0 3066 Should we use SNR rather than QC as the primary criterion for selecting data in aedit? For example, 195-0721_1357+769 was correlated twice. In one case, IE:X had the above problem (root code ojfaus) with SNR=10 and QC=9; in the other case, IE:X was OK (ojfbah) with SNR=38 and QC=8. Editing duplicates on the basis of QC caused the first processing to be picked, which is clearly not the right choice. Aedit plots of pcal_diff (= pcal phase differences between channels) showed unusual spikes for Kokee and Matera. Investigation revealed that pcal phase and amplitude can be corrupted when the discard rate for a channel is high. Happened for Matera and Kokee channel S6 and Kokee channel X7, all of which use data from the highest-numbered tracks. Does the effect on pcal phase/amp occur only when channels are fanned out? Hard to find scans with poor playback in other experiments still on disk (usually that's not a bad thing!) for comparison, but a sample of one from CB701 indicates that pcal phase is not sensitive to error rate when channels are not fanned out. Sept 22: Best value for fourfit's lsb_offset for Kokee (the only correlated station with a VLBA terminal -- the others are all MkIV) is ~270 degrees, judging from the 5 high-SNR Kokee/Westford scans on 1334-127. The value actually used to fringe the data was 280 deg. The difference in fringe amp with 270 and 280 degrees is ~0.1%, i.e., negligible. Fourfit 'B' error codes are all early Onsala scans with poor playback. Data sets selected in fourfit with 'edit dup qc' and 'edit dup snr' were compared, and where they differed the fringe plots were examined. In most cases, QC is the better selection criterion, but in a few cases (an example is given four paragraphs earlier) SNR is better. The basic list of type-2 records was created using 'edit dup qc', and then 12 records were replaced with higher-SNR records. Refringed 52 Matera S-band observations with a narrow MBD window to try to pick the correct subambiguity. Problem was caused by loss of two channels, as well as by bad pcal phases in channel S6 between 195-1100 and 195-1200 due to poor playback (see notes above about effect of poor playback on pcal data from correlator). Fringing was done between 266-2224 and 266-2225. One was redone with a yet narrower window at 266-2243. There were no mismatched FRTs in the fourfit output. Apparent mismatches for scans 195-0255_2234+282 and 195-1637_OJ287 were actually due to corrupt type-2 files, for which alist gave FRTs of HHMM = 0000. **************************************************************************** Station Mail: **************************************************************************** From haas@oso.chalmers.se Wed Jul 12 12:00:02 EDT 2000 Received: from hyperion.MITHAY (hyperion.haystack.edu [192.52.65.1]) by planck.haystack.edu (8.8.6 (PHNE_17135)/8.8.6) with ESMTP id MAA24009; Wed, 12 Jul 2000 12:00:01 -0400 (EDT) Received: from ivscc.gsfc.nasa.gov (ivscc.gsfc.nasa.gov [128.183.107.36]) by hyperion.MITHAY (8.9.3+Sun/8.9.1) with ESMTP id MAA01370; Wed, 12 Jul 2000 12:00:00 -0400 (EDT) Received: from barre.oso.chalmers.se (barre.oso.chalmers.se [129.16.208.54]) by ivscc.gsfc.nasa.gov (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id LAA19294 for ; Wed, 12 Jul 2000 11:52:45 -0400 (EDT) Received: from oso.chalmers.se (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by barre.oso.chalmers.se (8.9.3 (PHNE_18979)/8.9.3) with ESMTP id PAA02051; Wed, 12 Jul 2000 15:52:37 GMT Sender: haas@oso.chalmers.se Message-ID: <396C9444.BC63A705@oso.chalmers.se> Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 15:52:37 +0000 From: Ruediger Haas Organization: Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.51 [en] (X11; I; HP-UX B.10.20 9000/715) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: ivs-ops@ivscc.gsfc.nasa.gov Subject: Onsala ready for Core3001 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Status: RO Hej VLBI world, Onsala is ready to observe Core3001.
