Analysis Center

Analysis

Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien) has been running a Special VLBI Analysis Center (VIE) of the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS) since 2000. In this role, it has been involved in several research and operational tasks as described in the Annual Reports of the IVS (see further reading below). In July 2018, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the President of BEV, the Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying in Austria (Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen), VIE is run as a joint Analysis Center between TU Wien and BEV aiming at increased participation in the operational generation of geodetic products, such as the routine determination of Earth orientation parameters. Furthermore, VIE is heavily involved in the generation of the International Celestial and Terrestrial Reference Frames (e.g., ICRF3 and ITRF2020).

The Special Analysis Center in Vienna (VIE) is made up by members from TU Wien and BEV. The Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation (GEO) in the Faculty of Mathematics and Geoinformation of TU Wien is divided into eight research units. One of those entities, the research unit Higher Geodesy (HG) with about twenty members, is focusing on global navigation satellite systems and VLBI for geodesy and astrometry.

BEV is the institution responsible for official surveying, geo-information and weights and measures (metrology) in Austria. Currently, it belongs to the Federal Ministry on Digital and Economic Affairs. The Department of Control Survey at BEV is divided into several sections, such as the sections on reference systems as well as on geophysics and precise leveling. VLBI staff at BEV is attached to those two sections.

Analysis products generated by VIE can be accessed at the Products Page.
